Wine Bottle Watering Ideas
Are you planning to leave the house for a few days for vacation?
If you have plants, this raises a concern: Who will be taking care of the plants? Who will water them while you’re gone?
Recently my husband mentioned us taking a trip next month (July), well while it sounded fun – the first thing I thought is that I don’t have an irrigation system set up and I don’t have anyone to keep may garden alive.
When I mentioned this to him he, of course, rolled his eyes – that I would turn down a get away because of a garden… lol. But, I have a feeling you can relate.
So while there are timers and systems and irrigation kits and friends we can use for this, it got me to thinking of some ways to just take a day or two break from watering. Here in Texas we have to water once a day and sometimes twice if the weather is super hot.
But fun, cute, inexpensive, and functional are the things I look for when it comes to anything in my garden. Which led me to think about watering globes and such.

How To Make Your Own Plant Waterer
1. Prepare the bottle by removing the label. Take the cap off and set it aside. Fill the empty bottle with water and a few drops of dish soap, close it, then shake it. Open the bottle and rinse it well. Repeat this process until the water runs out clear, with no bubbles.

2. Fill a basin with water and 1 cup of washing soda. Put the bottles in the solution then leave them for 30 minutes to allow the glue on the labels to dissolve.
3. Remove the plastic or foam padding from the cap. Using a drill bit or a hammer and nail, punch a hole in the center of the cap.
4. Fill the bottle with cool water. Place the fabric over the top of the bottle and secure it with a rubber band then place the cap on.
Before you place this wine bottle waterer into the pot, make sure that you make at least a 2-inch deep hole in the soil. If you don’t create a hole first, the bottle may break as the soil will get forced into the bottle opening and create a clog.
Turn the bottle upside down and insert it into the hole. Keep pushing the wine bottle until it is pressed firmly into the soil.
However, if do-it-yourself crafts are not your thing, you can also buy ready made waterers for your garden.
These kits are easy to install. Most of them are just plug and play waterers: Just add water, insert it into the plant pot, and they’re ready to use.
Here are just a few of the ready-made wine bottle waterers you might like:
Plant Watering Stakes 6 Pack
- Remiawy terracotta watering spikes work through osmosis. The porous material prevents the water from pouring out of the bottles when plant watering spikes are inverted, and yet allows the water to seek through slowly. The wetter the soil, the slower the seep.As the soil dries, the water seeps out through plant watering devices. Your plants can be dispensed the appropriate amount of water and no overflow means they won’t lose any soil or nutrients to grow healthier
- How to use it: Soak the self watering stakes, water the soil and dig a hole before placing them into the pot. Drive the plant watering stakes deep into the soil so that the openings are flush with the soil.Stakes should be mostly buried in the soil. When the bottle needs refilling, just lift the empty bottle out, refill the bottle, and hold your finger under the upside down filled bottle as you set it back on top. Do not push the plant watering stakes hard to avoid breakage
- Plant watering stakes for potted plants are designed to work with long-necked bottles, which is what makes wine bottles optimal, however any long necked bottle made of any material should be compatible as long as it fits sturdily into the automatic plant waterers without being too top heavy. For small pots, you can use smaller beer bottles or wine bottles. An environmentally-friendly way to recycle bottle and water plants at the same time.
- These plant watering spikes for potted plants will give you peace of mind while on vacation. A litre of water works for approximately 7-10 days depending on the types of plants drawing water, soil composition, humidity. For large pot,you can put one plant watering spike by each plant or use a large wine bottle, but be sure to place it in the plant watering system carefully. It is suggested to test the plant watering stick before leaving on vacation.
Automatic Plant Watering Stakes
- These Watering Spikes will release water slowly and automatically. If the dirt around the stake is dry, the water automatically wicks from the ceramic into the dirt. And the water keeps wicking out into the dirt until the dirt is saturated with water, or until the water level of bottle is below the plant.
- Easy Set up: First, take the cap off and fill the ceramic stake with water, soak it in a bowl of water for 15 minutes. In the meantime, you can find a bottle and fill it with water. After 15 minutes, insert the stake into plant pot and plastic tube into the water bottle.
- Self Watering Volume Controllable – Be sure to make water bottle higher than plant pot and the Self-Watering Stake start to work automatically. You can control the watering volume by put the water bottle in different level. The higher water bottle is, the quicker it waters and vice verse.
- Convenient – For those who love plants but have a busy schedule in daily life or who travel frequently, this Vacation Plant Watering Device is a good choice for you.
- Durable – The Automatic Plant Watering Spikes are made of premium ceramic which has good permeability. The Watering Stakes are weather resistant, so they are durable enough for a long time service.
