Building a raised garden bed doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With just a few simple materials and some basic tools, you can create the perfect space for growing vegetables, flowers, or herbs in your backyard.

Raised Garden Bed With Easy Steps

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build your own raised garden bed without overspending.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Wooden Boards: Reclaimed wood or cedar works best. If you’re going for budget-friendly, you can also use untreated pine or even scrap wood.
  • Screws: Galvanized screws are ideal since they won’t rust when exposed to the elements.
  • A Saw: To cut the wood to size (or have the hardware store do it for you).
  • Drill: For screwing the pieces together.
  • Level: To ensure the bed sits evenly.
  • Garden Soil: A mix of good-quality soil and compost to fill your raised bed.

Step 1: Plan the Size of Your Garden Bed

Start by deciding where you want to place your raised garden bed and how big it should be. A standard size is 4 feet wide by 8 feet long, but you can adjust this based on your space.

Step 2: Cut the Wood to Size

Measure and cut your wooden boards according to the dimensions you’ve chosen. You’ll need four pieces for the sides, with two long pieces and two short pieces to form the rectangle.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

Once your pieces are cut, lay them out in the desired shape. Use screws to secure the corners of the frame.

You can either drill two screws at each corner or use corner brackets for extra stability. Make sure everything is square (use the level for accuracy).

I have never used these but think they are the best way to go for wooden beds and they’re cheap:

You just slide the boards in and no screws needed. And they’re just $3.50 each!

There are several kinds of raised beds you can choose from. I have wooden ones like we’re talking about here. I have concrete ones that consist of cinder blocks stacked up so I can stand and garden. I have bags large and small I use, and then I also have a multitude of plastic post and so forth.

I have a few of these and love them! And they’re just $25, partitioned into squares for square foot gardening and ready to use in seconds.

Step 4: Prepare the Ground

Before placing your frame, clear the area where the garden bed will go. Remove any grass, weeds, or debris, and level the ground as best as you can. This will help with drainage and provide a stable base.

Step 5: Fill the Bed with Soil

Now it’s time to fill the raised bed with soil! Start by adding a layer of rocks or gravel at the bottom to improve drainage, especially if your yard has heavy clay soil.

Then, add a mix of garden soil and compost to fill the bed to the top.

Step 6: Plant Your Garden!

Once your bed is filled, it’s time to start planting! Whether you’re growing vegetables, herbs, or flowers, your raised bed will provide a great growing environment with better drainage and soil quality than traditional ground planting.

Building a raised garden bed on a budget is easy and cost-effective, especially when using reclaimed or inexpensive materials.

Plus, it’s a fun DIY project that’ll help you create the perfect garden space for your needs.

Happy gardening!
